It pays to prepare yourself for winter driving

Frosty grass, ice-tipped evergreen trees and open roads blanketed in fresh powder — beautiful to see. But to drive in?Difficult and potentially dangerous would be a more apt description.Because winters in this part of the Pacific Northwest are mild in comparison with other parts of the country, Washington State Patrol spokesman Will Finn says drivers often aren't used to the road conditions and don't get practice driving in the snow.

"A lot of times we see drivers getting overconfident with their driving," he said.People with four-wheel drive may think their cars can handle faster speeds on icy or snowy roads; however, these vehicles can't stop any faster.AAA projects 93.3 million Americans traveling during the Christmas and New Years holidays, a 1.6 percent increase from last year. About 90 percent of travelers plan to go by car.

Jennifer Cook, spokeswoman for AAA Washington, says the first step to surviving the winter driving season is to take care of your car. Make sure the battery is healthy, fluid levels aren't low, the lights and windshield wipers are working, and the tires are fully inflated and have enough tread."As the temperatures go down, you're going to lose tire pressure," she said.

13 Travel Resolutions For 2013

With more than 31 years of experience trekking around the globe, I consider myself an experienced traveler, but even veteran travelers fall prey to travel missteps abroad. This year, I resolve to be a better-rounded traveler and soak up every minute of time I spend in each new destination.I resolve to avoid giving money to people I meet as I travel in a misguided effort to help those who are asking (begging) for money. Instead, I resolve to support real outreach to those same people through programs that make a difference yet don't encourage a culture of dependency.

I resolve to look at the people I meet as I travel, no matter how different from myself, as flavors of ice cream. Some of us are plain vanilla, some are fruity strawberry, and some are exotic rum raisin--but we're all still basically ice cream (or people). I resolve to learn a few words in the local language of the places I visit, like please, thank you and it's nice to meet you, as a gesture of respect.I resolve to remember to behave according to how I would like others to perceive Americans.

If I act like an idiot, those who may not have met many other Americans may assume we're all idiots. I resolve to pack lightly; keeping in mind that except for North Korea or maybe Somalia, pretty much everything I need is locally available, in one form or another. The lighter I pack, the easier it'll be for me to get around, and the more room I'll have for souvenirs to bring home. Whenever possible, I resolve to travel with only a carry-on bag if I can get away with it to avoid extra fees and hassle.

More people expected to travel for holidays

An estimated 93.3 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holidays of 2012, an increase of 1.6 percent over last year, according to AAA.The number of Illinois travelers also is expected to rise by 1.3 percent, to an estimated 4.7 million - with a majority traveling by automobile and about 270,000 expected to fly.

"The year-end holiday season remains the least volatile of all travel holidays as Americans will not let economic conditions or high gas prices dictate if they go home for the holidays or kick off the New Year with a vacation," said Beth Mosher, director of public affairs for AAA Chicago. "Primary economic indicators all show modest improvement from last year and AAA is projecting an increase in the number of Americans stuffing their stockings with airline tickets and hotel reservations."

Throughout Illinois and beyond, state, county and city police will be conducting additional roadside safety checks and late-night patrols concentrating on impaired driving, seat belt use, speeding and distracted driving. The Illinois Department of Transportation also will be suspending work in road construction zones to clear as many lanes as possible for travel.

While selecting a xinjiang travel agency, understanding preferences of your family members is crucial. For example, if you are planning to bring your kids, you should select packages that include visit to the theme park. If you are going on a honeymoon, on the other hand, the package should include a romantic trip or cheese and wine tour. In general, make sure that the package tour reflects your interests, preferences, and personality.

Ideally, climate should be considered an important factor for deciding the silk road tour package. If you hate summer, visiting a primarily summer country and vice-versa can ruin your trip. Be on the alert for travel scams

In a foreign country, "volunteers" may offer to assist you when you're making a transaction or using any automated machine. Be wary of any stranger who offers help too easily, particularly in high tourism areas or transportation hubs, such as Paris' subway and train stations, especially Gare du Nord. If possible, buy tickets in advance or through a window vendor at the station.

In certain parts of Southeast Asia, VirtualTourist members noted, locals may approach tourists, noting that the "palace is closed today because of" (fill in the blank with a religious ceremony, royal function, cleaning, etc). Then they'll steer you into a nearby tuk-tuk (or xinjiang travel agency), offering to take you to a gem factory or another tourist attraction. Sometimes these not-so-do-gooders might even have on a uniform. The palace/site/wat is probably not closed today, so before you turn around and embark on a tuk-tuk ride to commissioned jewelry stores and tailors, check for yourself.

There are numerous member reports of this at various places in Bangkok, Thailand, including the Grand Palace and Wat Po.The math genius is often a waiter or taxi driver, which helps (him, not you) since he's already provided you with a service for which you need to pay. Here's how it works in a taxi: xinjiang travel agenc, You owe the driver 15 euros, and you pay with a 20 euro bill (about $25). He switches out the bill you gave him for a 5 euro bill, which looks similar. He holds it up and argues that you owe him 10 more euros. You apologize and give him the 10 euros, and only after exiting the car do you realize you essentially paid twice the taxi fare.
